They were forced to play home games away from Coventry, at Northampton Town, and in 2017, they fell to the fourth tier for the first time in 59 years.
For those supporters in the Bridgford Stand at the City Ground on Saturday, who lived through those difficult years, the final whistle brought a sense of relief and celebration.
Jay Dasilva's goal secured the win, ending the long wait. "It's been a tough opening for us, so those first Premier League points feel great," Coventry manager Frank Lampard told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I thought the players were brilliant. The fight, work ethic and togetherness but also the tactical side of it. They dug and fought for each other which is what you need to win a Premier League game."
