Meta Ends Social VR Ambition: Horizon Worlds Shut Down on Quest
Tech giant Meta is making a significant strategic shift by deciding to cease development of its social virtual reality platform, Horizon Worlds, specifically for its Quest devices. This decision not only represents an abandonment of its flagship social metaverse project but also a clear sign that the company is re-evaluating its overall strategy in virtual and augmented reality.
The shutdown of Horizon Worlds on Quest marks the end of an era of intense experimentation and raises questions about the future of immersive social experiences as envisioned by Mark Zuckerberg and his team. It appears that Meta is now turning towards more concrete applications or higher-value VR/AR experiences, rather than pursuing a concept that did not achieve the expected widespread public adoption. This pivot could have significant repercussions for the entire VR industry.
